PERC Corpus of Professional English Unveiled

Tokyo - On June 25, the Professional English Research Consortium (PERC), an academic society, began to offer a free online service, "PERC Corpus Online," for searching the PERC Corpus, the world's first and largest specialized database (corpus) of professional English in the area of science and technology.

PERC Corpus Online with both English and Japanese interfaces, will be available for use at no charge until the end of June 2009. The service is operated by Tokyo-based NetAdvance Inc.

The service is being provided as one part of the "Shogakukan Corpus Network" portal site, which also offers access to the British National Corpus (BNC), with 100 million words, and the Wordbanks English Corpus, with 56 million words.

PERC, a professional society, was established in 2002 by scholars in fields of linguistics and English language education, in cooperation with a group of publishing companies.

The PERC Corpus, the largest published corpus in the field of science and technology, contains approximately 17 million words taken from papers published in leading journals in 22 fields including medicine, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, electronics, communications, and computer science.
